As young medical graduates in the 1970s we were told not to bother with infectious disease specialties as they had largely been fi xed with vaccines and antibiotics. There was a surplus of doctors, and the Alma Ata Declaration had ushered in a new model of primary health care which was going to solve third world poverty and disease.
